Son of Man, Son of God

Son of Man, Son of God

John 1:49-51

49 Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

“Who do men say that I am?” From the very first chapter of John, we see Jesus using the titles, “Son of Man”, and “Son of God”. These were titles associated with the Messiah, which was clearly understood by the Jews of that time. And in these dual titles lies another mystery of the gospel; How can Jesus be both the Son of God and the Son of Man? The fact that He is fully God and fully human is a mystery that was revealed in Jesus, but is not something that the natural mind can comprehend. How can a single person be both God and man? Only Jesus could be this, and is one of the first signs in the gospels that Jesus is the true Messiah.

There are Jews today who do not believe this. They say they are waiting for the true Messiah to come, but Jesus told us plainly that He is The One. So the questions remains, “Who do men say that I am?” When you encounter someone who does not believe that Jesus is the Messiah, refer them back to His own words. “You will see… the Son of Man.” And Nathaniel testified “Rabbi, You are the Son of God, You are the King of Israel.”

John 3:13-16

13 No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Sonof Man. 14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
