I Am the Vine

John 15:1-2 (NKJV) 

1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 “Every branch in Me thatdoes not bear fruit He takes away; and every [branch] that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

John 15:5 (NKJV) 

“I am the vine, you [are] the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bearsmuch fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

John 15:7-8 (NKJV) 

7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shallbe done for you. 8 “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

Who is Jesus? Another word picture that Jesus gives us is in John 15. “I am the true vine…” this again was not an image of Messiah that the Jews were expecting. A humble vine is not anything like the warrior king that they were expecting. So what does this image tell us about Jesus? A healthy vine grows and spreads and produces grapes that bring joy to the heart. But to remain healthy, each branch must be attached to the main vine. It must abide in the vine. Unhealthy branches were pruned and thrown into the fire to be burned. This was a familiar image to his listeners many of whom were farmers and vine dressers. But how does this relate to Jesus as Messiah?

Jesus is saying that He came to bring new life to Israel, but for anyone to experience that new life and to bear fruit, they must abide in the vine. To abide is to be closely attached, receiving life from the main vine continually. To abide is to have life and bear fruit, but to be cut off and pruned was to experience dryness and death. The contrast between the healthy vine, full of sweet grapes, and the dead branches, burning in the fire, is a vivid picture of the true kingdom that Messiah Jesus is bringing. True life does not come from warring against your enemies, but true life come from abiding in the vine, being attached to and deriving life from Jesus. 

So the lesson for today is to abide in the vine. Jesus is the vine and brings us true life when we remain firmly attached to Him. Then we will bear much fruit.
