Wings like Eagles

Isaiah 40:28-31
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable.
29 He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.
30 Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
31 Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
I was reminded this morning that this was a favorite verse of one of my former pastors, Michael. He had been a former newspaper man, so now he’s publishing good news in the heavenlies as he soars with the eagles and angels on high.
This was also the scripture that Ern Baxter used in his most famous sermon on eagles. I always loved to hear him preach on eagles. He looked somewhat like an Eagle himself with his beak of a nose and his tremendous wingspan. And when he preached on eagles, you could almost see him soar. “Mount up!”, he would say. Wait for the wind of the Spirit to pick you up and carry you to great heights. But never so high that your keen eagles eye can’t see the ground. The Eagle can spot his prey from great heights and swoop down with deadly force to capture his foe. No enemy can stand before the mighty Eagle as it soars and dives on powerful wings, always aware of the currents of the Spirit that power and guide him. An Eagle christian is likewise powerful, with a keen eye to spot and take out his spiritual enemies. Brother Ern could make it sound like the eagles were right there in the room with us, and now, he too is soaring with the angels and eagles in heavenly places.
So wait on the Lord so that He will give you new strength that you too may mount up on wings like an Eagle, not getting tired but relying on the wind of the Spirit to carry you to new heights in the Lord.
