Psalm 29- The Voice of the Lord

Psalm 29- The Voice of the Lord

Psalms 29:1-2

1 Give unto the LORD, O you mighty ones,

Give unto the LORD glory and strength.

2 Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name;

Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Psalms 29:3-11 (NKJV)

3 The voice of the LORD [is] over the waters; The God of glory thunders; The LORD [is] over many waters. 4 The voice of the LORD [is] powerful; The voice of the LORD [is] full of majesty. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, Yes, the LORD splinters the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes them also skip like a calf, Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD divides the flames of fire. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; The LORD shakes the Wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth, And strips the forests bare; And in His temple everyone says, “Glory!” 10 The LORD sat [enthroned] at the Flood, And the LORD sits as King forever. 11 The LORD will give strength to His people; The LORD will bless His people with peace.

Psalm 29 gives us a word picture of the power of the voice of the Lord. Of course, this thought didn’t originate in Psalms. In Genesis 1 we first see the power of the voice of the Lord who created all the world by the creative power of His word.

Genesis 1 (NKJV)

3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”

9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry [land] appear”; and it was so.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb [that] yields seed, [and] the fruit tree [that] yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed [is] in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.

14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;

20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.”

24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, [each] according to its kind”; and it was so.

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 2:2-3 (NKJV)

2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.

This is expanded on in the New Testament in the first chapter of John where we learn that not only did the Word create all things, but also that Jesus is the Word.

John 1:1-5 (NKJV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There are many scriptures in the Gospels where Jesus used his voice to exercise power to heal, to deliver, to save and to raise from the dead. He even commanded the storm to be still and the wind and waves were calmed.

So we see from the Psalm and the Gospels that the voice of the Father and the voice of Jesus both carry great power. But what about our voice? What does the Lord intend for us to accomplish when we speak? Let us look at the instructions that Jesus gave his disciples when he sent them out.

Luke 9:1-2

1 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

Matthew 10:7-8

And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.

Clearly, Jesus told them to preach the gospel, and he fully expected that the words of their preaching would carry his power and authority to heal the sick and deliver the oppressed. Words have power and when we are sent out by the Lord, they also carry His authority. We need to acknowledge this and do what the disciples did, go into all the world and preach the gospel.

According the the book of Revelations, our voices will be added His voice until such time as there is a great multitude whose voices will sound like thunder as we all proclaim the glory and majesty of the Lord God Omnipotent!

Revelation 19:6-7

And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! 7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”

So listen to the voice of the Lord, and proclaim with your voice the Gospel of the Kingdom until that day when we all rase a mighty shout at the marriage supper of the Lamb!
