Psalm 3
A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son
O Lord, how my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
Many are saying of my soul,
“There is no deliverance for him in God.”
Selah.
But You, O Lord, are a shield about me,
My glory, and the One who lifts my head.
I was crying to the Lord with my voice,
And He answered me from His holy mountain.
Selah.
I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me round about.
Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God!
For You have smitten all my enemies on the cheek;
You have shattered the teeth of the wicked.
Salvation belongs to the Lord;
Your blessing be upon Your people!
Selah. NASB
Have you ever felt that the whole world was against you? Or that even those in your own family were out to get you? King David not only imagined it; his own son Absolom had raised an army to try to take the throne from him. What was his response? He complained for a bit, sure, but then he starts to praise the Lord- "My glory and the lifter of my head..." and then thanks the Lord for His answer to this cry. The Lord even helped David to sleep in the midst of his troubles and gave him the strength to "not be afraid of ten thousands of people".
But David was a king, and you would expect him to be a man of faith and power, right! But what about you and me. What do we do when our children don't do the things that we think they should, and they disappoint and hurt us? They say that small children have small problems, but grown children have big problems. So what do we do when our own family members make life altering decisions that we clearly taught them were the wrong thing to do! Can we have the faith of King David to cry out to the Lord, but to praise Him regardless of the circumstances? Can we have the courage to not be afraid of ten thousands of problems, even though we can clearly see them coming?
Lord, help us to trust you when those closest to us disappoint and hurt us. Even when they don't listen to our clearly superior advice! Help us to praise and worship you in the midst of the problem and trust you to bring Your salvation to the situation, despite what our own eyes may be telling us.
Amen
